Applaud

Brand identity for Applaud, a Canadian public sector organization, built around a credible, warm system for consistent communication.
context
Applaud is an association that brings together current and retired government employees, supporting them through educational programs, events, benefits, and community initiatives. It's an organization built entirely around people (different ages, different backgrounds, different stages of their careers) connected by a shared professional history.

The brand already had a logo and an established visual identity. But over time, the system stopped keeping up with where the organization was headed. After launching a redesigned website with updated graphic approaches, Applaud needed the rest of their visual communication to catch up—a unified language across all touchpoints, built on the same foundation, but more flexible and more modern. The Client came to our partners at Marketica, who brought us in to handle the visual identity refresh with the goal of creating a system that could support future programs, communications, and member initiatives without requiring constant redesign work.
goals
Modernize the visual identity while preserving brand recognition. Build a more scalable and flexible design system. Align all brand communications with the updated website. Develop a consistent visual language for Applaud's internal sub-programs. Deliver a comprehensive brand guidelines document the team could use independently to reduce reliance on external design support and improve day-to-day operational efficiency.

The Insight
When a brand already has meaningful visual codes built into its DNA, the right move isn't to start over, it's to figure out how far those codes can actually go. Applaud's existing identity was built around the ellipse, a shape that already carried real conceptual weight: unity, wholeness, people coming together.

The system just wasn't flexible enough to grow with the organization. Rather than replacing the foundation, we rebuilt on top of it, giving the same core idea more room to breathe and more ways to express itself across an expanding range of touchpoints while preserving the recognition and continuity the organization had spent years building.
The Process
We began with a full brand audit to decide what to keep and what to leave behind. The ellipse stayed, since it was too central to the brand's meaning to walk away from. Where the old identity kept ellipses separate, we let them combine and overlap into composite structures, turning two simple forms, a full ellipse and a half ellipse, into an almost unlimited range of configurations that adapt across new programs without expanding the system.

From there, we layered in a set of new techniques: negative space as an active compositional tool, handwritten underlines and outlines to bring a human quality to layouts, and a photo system using ellipses as portrait containers, tying photographic content directly into the visual language.

Typography followed the same principles: large, bold headlines, each ending in a period, because every message should feel complete.

Finally, we built a sub-brand system for Applaud's four programs, Book Club, Cave Time, Pro, and Travel Club Tuesdays, each with its own icon, color, and pattern. The full deliverable also included a 101-page guidelines document and a ready-to-use template library.

The Result
Applaud got a 101-page brand guidelines system that gives their team full independence: new materials, new programs, all producible without bringing in outside help every time. The sub-brand framework means each internal initiative now has a distinct, recognizable presence without fragmenting the overall brand, making it easier for members to navigate Applaud's offerings and for the organization to communicate consistently across all of them.

The refreshed identity also removed a practical ceiling the old system had. Where the previous version offered a limited set of compositional options, the new one is open-ended enough to support whatever comes next, without requiring another rebrand to get there.
